A worked example. You draw the king of hearts, queen of hearts, king of spades, seven of clubs and three of diamonds. The pair of kings outranks the two suited high cards, so you keep both kings and draw three. Holding the suited king-queen for a royal chase would look tempting, but the made high pair wins on expected value.

Deuces Wild uses a different ladder because the twos rewrite everything. There, a single deuce alone often beats a low pair, and any four wilds is an automatic hold. Learn one machine's chart fully before moving to the next; mixing the two ladders is how players give back their edge.
